If you haven’t heard over facebook, yehoodi, or word of mouth recently, Dax Hock and Sarah Breck were on national television representing Lindy Hop in Paula Abdul’s show, “Live To Dance“.

The song they perform to is “We No Speak Americano” by Yolanda Be Cool. Which, while not traditional swing dance music I can understand the choice because they are trying to appeal to the general public.

Dax and Sarah... and a Plane

What I do admire though, is Dax rising to the occasion in spite of his injury. They both put on a performance to be proud of.

In my opinion they have earned the “Spirit of Lindy” title they have listed on their website.

Update: Here’s an interview with them.

  1. I love that song so I was unusually super okay with a non-swing choice to for “the” Lindy Hop. I think they rocked it.

It did seem a little subdued and I was with Travis in that at first I was bored because I know those two can really fly. When it picked up, the tension broke and I was given what I was looking for.

I hate the Injury Narrative. Paula talked so much about the injury that I just wanted her to move along and really comment on the dancing. But Injury = Drama so they played that up. Too much, in my opinion.

I’m really excited for them, though. And by association – me!

  2. I’m stoked Dax & Sarah made it to semi-finals… it would be fantastic if they progressed further because the exposure they are giving Lindy Hop is fabulous. I thought the song choice was fun, especially using the older version of the song to start out.
I really didn’t like Travis’ approach to the dissenting view. I get that that sort of thing is popular (ostensibly. I personally hate it) but I dislike the way criticism is made to be so harsh on reality shows. It’s like constructive, polite criticism isn’t possible or accessible for the audience. He had a point about the music being slow for his tastes, and about Dax not being able to dance as energetically, but I thought he could have been more tactful.

  3. I don’t agree at all about the performance being boring. Lindy Hop isn’t all about throwing the girl in the air and the moves they did instead were very rhythmic and still entertaining. I think if the judges were bored by it it’s cause they aren’t a part of that culture and I respect the dancers more who are able to work with the music and make their bodies move like the song sounds. But big and flashy works for the general public, so I can understand why the judge and others might have been bored or disappointed.
